Lights Out 2016

 

Lights Out is a horror movie made in 2016. It was directed by David F. Sandberg, who had never directed a movie before. Lawrence Grey, James Wan, and Eric Heisserer produced the movie, while Heisserer also wrote the screenplay. The movie stars Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello. The story is based on Sandberg's short film of the same name, which became popular and led to the movie adaptation. The film was shot in Los Angeles between June and August of 2015. The world premiere took place on June 8, 2016, at the Los Angeles Film Festival, and it was released in the United States and Canada on July 22, 2016, by Warner Bros. The movie was praised by critics for its direction, screenplay, acting, photography, and musical score. It grossed $148 million worldwide, which was much more than its $4.9 million budget.

 

 

The story is about a woman named Esther who works in a factory. One day she sees a strange woman with claw-like hands when the lights are off, but she disappears when the lights are turned on. Later on, her boss Paul encounters the same woman and is killed by her.

Rebecca, Paul's stepdaughter, is called to her brother Martin's school because he has been falling asleep in class. Martin and Rebecca have the same mother named Sophie. A Child Protective Services agent comes to question Rebecca about their living conditions. Rebecca tells the agent that Sophie has depression and is taking medicine.

Martin tells Rebecca that their mother talks to a woman named Diana. Rebecca tells Martin that Diana is not real and that she also heard their mother talk to the imaginary girl when she was a child. One night, Rebecca is woken up by the same shadowed woman that killed Paul. She narrowly escapes an attack when she turns the lights on, making the woman disappear. The next morning, she sees the name "Diana" has been scratched into her floor and realizes that Diana is real.

Rebecca finds a box of medical records and research in Paul's office. His findings reveal that her mother was admitted to a mental hospital as a child. While there, she befriended a young patient named Diana, who was accidentally killed by the hospital staff during surgery. Diana's father committed suicide after Diana got into his head and influenced him to kill himself.

Rebecca, her boyfriend Bret, and Martin stage an intervention with Sophie to help her deal with Diana. Sophie secretly asks Rebecca for help because Diana won't leave her alone. That night, they stay at Sophie's house and make sure it's brightly lit to avoid an attack from Diana. However, Diana cuts the power to the neighborhood and attacks them. Sophie realizes that she is the reason Diana can exist in the real world and sacrifices herself to save Rebecca. Diana disappears and Bret assures Rebecca and Martin that Diana is truly gone.
