"The Curse of La Llorona" is a 2019 American supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves, written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, and produced by James Wan through his Atomic Monster Productions banner. It is the sixth installment in the Conjuring Universe franchise and is based on the Latin American folklore of La Llorona. The film stars Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz, and Patricia Velásquez and follows a mother in 1973 Los Angeles who must save her children from a malevolent spirit that is trying to steal them. The film premiered at South by Southwest on March 15, 2019, and was released in theaters in the United States on April 19, 2019. It received mixed reviews, with criticism aimed at its reliance on jump scares, and grossed $123 million worldwide against a budget of $9 million. Though it was the lowest-grossing film in the Conjuring franchise, it was still successful at the box office.

The Curse of La Llorona Plot:

 In 1673 Mexico, a family is playing when the youngest son gives his mother a necklace. Later, the boy watches in horror as his mother drowns his brother and then him in a stream. Three hundred years later, in 1973 Los Angeles, caseworker Anna Tate-Garcia is investigating the truancy of two children. The boys tell Anna to keep them in a room, but she ignores their warning and takes them to a child-services shelter. There, the boys see a woman in a white dress who attacks them. The boys are found drowned in a river, and Anna hears Patricia, their mother, screaming that it was Anna's fault for taking her sons and that Patricia had tried to stop the malevolent force of "La Llorona." Anna's own children, Chris and Sam, encounter La Llorona, who leaves burn marks on their wrists. Anna seeks help from Father Perez, who brings in Rafael Olvera, a former priest with experience in fighting the supernatural. La Llorona repeatedly attacks them, but they manage to pull off her necklace and stab her through the chest with a cross made from a Fire Tree. Anna and her children thank Rafael for his help, and Anna sees what looks like a puddle of tears.
