The Witcher
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich produced The Witcher, a fantasy drama series
that originated from the book series of the same title by Polish writer
Andrzej Sapkowski. The show is set on a medieval-inspired landmass named
"the Continent" and delves into the legend of Geralt of Rivia and
princess Ciri, whose fates are intertwined. The cast includes Henry
Cavill, Freya Allan, and Anya Chalotra. Initially, the series follows
the three main protagonists at different stages of their lives,
exploring pivotal events that shape their characters, before merging
into a unified timeline. The first season premiered on Netflix on
December 20, 2019, featuring eight episodes based on The Last Wish and
Sword of Destiny, which are collections of short stories that precede
the primary Witcher saga. Netflix announced the release of a second
eight-episode season in 2021 before the first season had even premiered.
Production was scheduled to commence in London in early 2020.
The Witcher Plot:
1 "In the first episode of "The Witcher," Geralt of Rivia battles a
kikimora in 1231 and then arrives at the town of Blaviken, where he
meets Renfri, a cursed princess-turned-bandit. The wizard Stregobor
wants Renfri dead because he believes she is evil due to her birth
during an eclipse. Stregobor tries to hire Geralt to kill Renfri, but
Geralt refuses. Renfri then proposes a counteroffer, but Geralt gives
her an ultimatum to leave or die. The next morning, Geralt realizes
Renfri will not stop until Stregobor is dead, and he rushes to stop her.
After a fight, Geralt fatally wounds Renfri, and she tells him of a
girl in the forest who is his destiny forever. Stregobor arrives to take
Renfri's body for an autopsy, and the townsfolk force Geralt to leave.
In 1263, the kingdom of Cintra is conquered by Nilfgaard, and Princess
Cirilla, also known as Ciri, is sent away by her grandmother, Queen
Calanthe, to find Geralt. Ciri is captured by Nilfgaardian officer
Cahir, but she uses her powers to escape after seeing the burning city
and castle.
2 "Four Marks" is an episode from the first season of the Netflix series "The Witcher." The episode consists of three interconnected stories set in different time periods. In the first story, Yennefer, a hunchbacked girl from Aedirn, is sold by her father to Tissaia de Vries and taken to Aretuza for magical training. Yennefer struggles with her training but befriends Istredd, revealing her quarter-elf heritage. Unbeknownst to them, Tissaia and Stregobor use them to spy on each other. Yennefer witnesses Tissaia turning three students into eels to power Aretuza. In the second story, Geralt is hired to investigate grain thefts in Posada and is followed by Jaskier the bard. They encounter a Sylvan named Torque and are taken to his mountain cave, where they meet Filavandrel, the elven king, and persuade him to lead his people to better lands. In the third story, Cirilla encounters a boy named Dara in the woods and follows him to a refugee camp, which is attacked by Cahir's forces. Dara turns out to be an elf, and he saves Cirilla from captivity.
3 The "Betrayer Moon" episode of The Witcher's first season follows three
storylines across different time periods. In 1210, Yennefer and Istredd
become lovers during their graduation from sorcerer training. Yennefer
is assigned to Nilfgaard instead of her preferred Aedirn due to
Stregobor's scheme, causing her to break up with Istredd and undergo a
painful transformation to be beautiful. In 1243, Geralt and Triss
Merigold investigate a curse in Temeria caused by the courtier Ostrit's
knowledge of King Foltest's affair with his sister. Using Ostrit as
bait, Geralt battles the resulting Shtriga until dawn to lift the curse.
In 1263, Ciri enters a trance and ventures into a dense forest followed
by Dara.
4 "In "Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials," several events take place in
different time periods. In 1240, Yennefer escorts Queen Kalis of Lyria,
but an assassin kills Kalis and her newborn daughter. In 1249, Geralt
attends the betrothal feast of Princess Pavetta, where Urcheon of
Erlenwald demands Pavetta's hand in marriage through the Law of
Surprise. After a brawl, Pavetta reveals her power, and Calanthe agrees
to the marriage, which lifts Urcheon's curse. Geralt jokingly invokes
the Law of Surprise, and it is revealed that Pavetta is pregnant with
Urcheon's child. In 1263, Nilfgaard resumes its pursuit of Cirilla, and
she encounters Queen Eithne and her Dryads in Brokilon Forest, while
Cahir and Fringilla track her location..
5 The article is a brief summary of two storylines from the TV series "The
Witcher." The first story revolves around Geralt and Jaskier
accidentally releasing a Djinn and seeking help from Yennefer to cure
Jaskier's illness. Yennefer's plan is to capture the Djinn to grant her
wish of regaining her fertility, but Geralt uses his final wish to save
her from the Djinn. The second storyline follows Cahir, who hires a
doppler to assume the identity of Mousesack and kills him. Later,
"Mousesack" arrives to take Ciri and Dara away from Brokilon, where they
had been granted refuge.
