Sinister 2012
Sinister is a supernatural horror movie released in 2012, co-written and directed by Scott Derrickson. The film features a cast that includes Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone, Fred Thompson, and Vincent D'Onofrio. The story centers around a true-crime author named Ellison Oswalt who moves into a new house and discovers a box of home movies depicting gruesome murders in the attic, putting his family's safety at risk.
The inspiration for Sinister came from a nightmare experienced by co-writer C. Robert Cargill after watching The Ring in 2002. Principal photography began in the fall of 2011 with a production budget of $3 million. The Super 8 segments of the film were shot on actual Super 8 cameras and film stock to add authenticity to the old home movie and snuff film scenes. The film was a co-production between the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Sinister premiered at the SXSW festival and was released in the United States on October 12, 2012, and in the UK on October 5, 2012. The movie received positive reviews, with critics praising the acting, direction, music, cinematography, and atmosphere. However, some critics criticized its use of jump scares and horror cliches. Despite this, the film was a commercial success, grossing $87.7 million against its $3 million budget.
The success of Sinister led to the production of a sequel, Sinister 2, which was released in the United States on August 21, 2015. The movie's end credits feature the song "Gyroscope" by Scottish electronic band Boards of Canada from their album Geogaddi.
