The Nun (2018)

The Nun (2018)

The Nun is a 2018 American gothic supernatural horror film, which serves as a spin-off of the Conjuring Universe franchise. Directed by Corin Hardy and written by Gary Dauberman, based on a story by Dauberman and James Wan, it stars Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, and Bonnie Aarons as the Demon Nun, an incarnation of Valak, from The Conjuring 2. The story follows a Roman Catholic priest and a novitiate nun, who uncover an unholy secret in 1952 Romania.

The idea for The Nun emerged soon after the release of The Conjuring 2, and it was produced by Safran and Wan, with the initial script written by David Leslie Johnson. Hardy was later brought on board to direct, with Wan and Dauberman contributing a new screenplay. Principal photography began in May 2017 in Bucharest, Romania, and during filming, the set was blessed by a Roman Catholic clergyman.

The Nun was released in the United States on September 7, 2018, by Warner Bros. Pictures. While it received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its performances and atmosphere, and criticism for its weak narrative and over-reliance on jump-scares, it was a commercial success, grossing $365 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the franchise. A sequel is currently in development, with Akela Cooper writing the script and James Wan and Peter Safran co-producing the project.

The Nun (2018) Plot:

The story is about two Roman Catholic nuns who live in a monastery in Romania in 1952. They are attacked by a demon while trying to retrieve an ancient Christian relic from a tunnel. One of the nuns, Sister Victoria, survives the attack but later hangs herself. The Vatican sends Father Burke and Sister Irene to investigate the incident. They travel to Romania and meet with Frenchie, a villager who takes them to the monastery. They discover that the nuns are praying constantly to keep the evil entity at bay and that the monastery has a dark history involving a duke who summoned a demon. They also learn that Valak is the demon responsible for the attacks. In order to stop Valak, they need to seal the rift with the Blood of Christ contained in the reliquary. They retrieve the vial and use it to seal the rift, but Irene is possessed by Valak. Frenchie saves her by smearing some of the Blood of Christ on her face. They succeed in banishing Valak and sealing the rift, but it is revealed that Frenchie was possessed by Valak all along. Nineteen years later, the Warrens present footage of their attempt to exorcise a possessed Maurice, who is actually Frenchie.
