The Nun (2018)
The Nun is a 2018 American gothic supernatural horror film, which serves as a spin-off of the Conjuring Universe franchise. Directed by Corin Hardy and written by Gary Dauberman, based on a story by Dauberman and James Wan, it stars Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, and Bonnie Aarons as the Demon Nun, an incarnation of Valak, from The Conjuring 2. The story follows a Roman Catholic priest and a novitiate nun, who uncover an unholy secret in 1952 Romania.
The idea for The Nun emerged soon after the release of The Conjuring 2, and it was produced by Safran and Wan, with the initial script written by David Leslie Johnson. Hardy was later brought on board to direct, with Wan and Dauberman contributing a new screenplay. Principal photography began in May 2017 in Bucharest, Romania, and during filming, the set was blessed by a Roman Catholic clergyman.
The Nun was released in the United States on September 7, 2018, by Warner Bros. Pictures. While it received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its performances and atmosphere, and criticism for its weak narrative and over-reliance on jump-scares, it was a commercial success, grossing $365 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the franchise. A sequel is currently in development, with Akela Cooper writing the script and James Wan and Peter Safran co-producing the project.
