Angrezi Medium - 2020
Angrezi Medium is a Hindi-language comedy-drama movie released in 2020, directed by Homi Adajania and produced under the banner of Maddock Films. It is a spiritual sequel to the 2017 hit movie Hindi Medium and features Irrfan Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepak Dobriyal, and Radhika Madan in leading roles.
The filming of the movie began in Udaipur on 5th April 2019 and wrapped up by July in London. Sadly, Angrezi Medium marked Irrfan Khan's last film before he passed away on 29th April 2020.
The film was originally released in cinemas in India on 13th March 2020. Unfortunately, the theatrical performance of the movie was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent closure of cinemas. Plans for a re-release were scrapped, and the movie was made available digitally on Disney+ Hotstar just a few weeks after its theatrical release.
Plot:
Champak Bansal (played by the late Irrfan Khan) is a widower and the owner of a sweet-shop in Udaipur, Rajasthan. He has a strained relationship with his half-brother Gopi (Deepak Dobriyal), who runs a competing sweet-shop nearby, but they both adore Champak's daughter Tarika (Radhika Madan). Tarika has always dreamed of studying abroad, and even though she struggles in school, Champak is determined to help her achieve her goals. After a lot of hard work, Tarika earns a scholarship to study at Truford University in London, which has partnered with her school.
On the day of the school's Annual Day, Champak sees that the chief guest is Judge Chheda, who recently accepted a bribe from Gopi to win the rights to the Ghasiteram family name. Champak exposes the judge in front of everyone, not realizing that the judge is the principal's husband. The principal tears up Tarika's scholarship letter in retaliation. However, Champak is determined to send Tarika to London no matter what.
With the help of a London-based acquaintance, Bablu (Ranvir Shorey), Champak, Tarika, and Gopi travel to London to find a place for Tarika to stay until college starts. But when they inadvertently say they have "drugs" to airport police, they are deported and their passports are blacklisted. Tarika is left alone in London, and Champak and Gopi are forced to seek help from a fixer in Dubai named Tony (Pankaj Tripathi). Tony gives them Pakistani aliases and forged passports, and they return to London, where they stay with Mrs. Kohli (Dimple Kapadia), Naina's estranged mother.
When they see Tarika's new lifestyle, Champak is appalled and threatens to cut ties with her unless she leaves her lodgings to avoid getting caught by Naina. Champak, Gopi, and Bablu pay for Bablu's bail and attend a fundraiser organized by Truford University to raise funds for its renovation. They bid for the renovation, which costs 300,000 pounds, and agree to sell the Ghasiteram family name to raise the money.
When Champak tells Tarika, she is shocked and decides to give up her scholarship and study in Udaipur instead. The film ends with Champak and Gopi reconciling over the Ghasiteram name.
