A Quiet Place is a 2018 American science fiction horror film that was directed, co-written and starred in by John Krasinski. The movie was written by Bryan Woods, Scott Beck and Krasinski, and follows the story of a family struggling to survive and raise their children in a post-apocalyptic world, inhabited by blind extraterrestrial creatures with an acute sense of hearing.

The idea for the film was initially developed by Woods and Beck while they were in college, and Krasinski was later hired to direct and rewrite the script in March of the following year. Drawing inspiration from other movies such as Alien, No Country for Old Men, and In the Bedroom, Krasinski and Emily Blunt were cast in the lead roles in May 2017, and filming took place in upstate New York from May to November 2017.

A Quiet Place premiered at South by Southwest on March 9, 2018, and was released in the United States on April 6, 2018, by Paramount Pictures. The film was a major box office success, grossing over $340 million worldwide, and received critical acclaim for its atmosphere, direction, acting, and sound design. It was described as a "smart, wickedly frightening good time" and was chosen by both the National Board of Review and American Film Institute as one of the top ten films of 2018.

The movie also received several award nominations, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, a Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture, a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Blunt, which she later won. It was also nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Sound at the 72nd BAFTA Awards, as well as an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing at the 91st Academy Awards.

A sequel, A Quiet Place Part II, was scheduled to be released on September 4, 2020, with Krasinski again directing and the main cast returning. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film's release date was pushed back several times, and it was eventually released on May 28, 2021. The sequel received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike and was also a box office success.

A Quiet Place 2018 Plot:

In 2020, Earth's human and animal populations were decimated by extraterrestrial creatures that attack anything that makes noise. The Abbott family, consisting of wife Evelyn, husband Lee, deaf daughter Regan, and sons Marcus and Beau, survive by communicating through American Sign Language while scavenging for supplies. Unfortunately, Beau's love for a noisy toy leads to his tragic death when a creature hears and attacks him.

Over a year later, the family is still struggling to survive. Regan feels guilty about her brother's death, Evelyn is in the final stages of pregnancy, and Lee tries to make radio contact with the outside world. Lee attempts to restore Regan's hearing by upgrading her cochlear implant, but the attempt fails. During a fishing lesson with Marcus, Lee reveals that they can mask their voices from the creatures by staying in loud environments. Marcus tells Lee that Regan blames herself for Beau's death and needs his love and reassurance.

Evelyn goes into labor while alone at the house, and accidentally alerts a creature when she steps on a nail. She changes the exterior house lights to red as a danger signal and tries to remain silent. Lee, who sees the lights, instructs Marcus to set off fireworks to create a diversion. Lee finds Evelyn hiding in the bathroom with their newborn son and leads them to their improvised soundproofed basement. He leaves to find the other children, promising to protect them.

However, the basement floods with water, and a creature finds its way inside. Regan and Marcus take refuge atop a grain silo, but the fire they light to attract Lee's attention dies out. A creature attacks them, but Regan's cochlear implant emits a high-frequency sound that drives it away. They escape and reunite with Lee, but the creature attacks and wounds him. Marcus and Regan hide in a truck while Lee sacrifices himself to distract the creature.

The family retreats to the basement, where Regan realizes that the creature is sensitive to the sound emitted by her cochlear implant. She places it on a nearby microphone, amplifying the feedback and disorienting the creature. Evelyn fatally shoots it with a shotgun, but two more creatures approach the house. The family prepares to fight back, armed with the newfound knowledge of the creatures' weakness.
