Morbius is an upcoming superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. The movie is intended to be the second installment in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. The film is directed by Daniel Espinosa, with a script written by the teams of Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway.

Jared Leto stars as Michael Morbius, a scientist who turns into a type of vampire after attempting to cure himself of a rare blood disease. He is joined by Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson in the cast.

Sony announced plans for a new shared universe of films based on Spider-Man characters, starting with Venom in 2018. Morbius was then developed as the next installment, with Sazama and Sharpless writing the script in November 2017. Marcum and Holloway joined the writing team later, with Leto and Espinosa officially joining the project in June 2018. Filming began in February 2019 in London, and the production was confirmed to have been completed by June 2019.

Originally set to release in July 2020, Morbius was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now scheduled for release in the United States on March 19, 2021.

Premise

In the film, Michael Morbius is a brilliant biochemist who is suffering from a rare blood disease. Desperate to find a cure, he conducts a risky experiment that involves using a serum derived from bats. However, the experiment goes wrong, and Morbius finds himself transformed into a vampire-like creature with superhuman strength, speed, and agility.

As Morbius struggles to come to terms with his new condition, he realizes that his newfound powers come with a terrible cost. He must consume human blood to survive, and his actions soon draw the attention of law enforcement and the public. Meanwhile, Morbius is pursued by a mysterious figure who seems to have a personal vendetta against him.

With the help of his close friend Martine Bancroft, Morbius tries to find a way to reverse the effects of the serum and regain his humanity. However, he soon discovers that his condition may be irreversible, and he must learn to live with the consequences of his actions.
