Sijjin is a horror film series that originated in Turkey in 2014. The franchise's title, SİCCÎN, is a Kurmanji Kurdish word that translates to 'violent' or 'vehement.' Director Alper Mestçi, known for his successful box office hits, returned to the horror genre with this franchise. Muhtesem Tözüm produced all the films under his Muhtesem Film studio. The series quickly gained global acceptance and was recognized as a new wave of Turkish horror.
The title of the franchise is derived from the Arabic word Sijjin (سِجِّين), which refers to either a book that lists the names of the damned or a prison located in the bottom of hell. Its origins are unclear, but it appears in the Qur'an in Surah 83:7–9. A similar word (Sijill) appears in 21:104 and is often translated as 'scroll.'
